A Personal Leadership Journey<\/a><\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93437c8 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"93437c8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84da4c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-theme-post-content\" data-id=\"84da4c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"theme-post-content.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflecting on My Leadership Journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m coming off a bit of a high from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wbeconference.ca\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wbeconference.ca\/\">WBE Canada National Conference<\/a> where I was honoured to receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/wbeconference.ca\/awards\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wbeconference.ca\/awards\/\">2025 Leadership Award<\/a>, and I\u2019ve been reflecting on what it really means to be a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, I believe that I\u2019m a natural born leader. My leadership journey began with my very first job as a Lifeguard, where I made my way from a shy, introverted child to a young, confident adolescent learning to find her voice, assertiveness, and natural ability to guide others. That early version of me eventually found her way into the corporate tech world, where being bold, decisive, and unapologetically assertive became key to my progression in management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leadership as a Continuous Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultivating leadership is a continuous process of developing skills through formal learning, hands-on experiences, mentorship\/coaching, and a level of emotional intelligence and awareness that is both elevated and intentional. Leadership is a constant growth project. The desire to keep improving, keep learning, and lift others along the way is innate for some. For others, it can be developed if there\u2019s a genuine interest in growing and helping people. If not, that\u2019s okay too! Leadership is not for everyone, and teams thrive when people play different roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I think about the last couple of years, I can see how far I\u2019ve stretched myself. I stepped out of the comfort of the back-office, where I spent the first couple of years of <strong>Expertis <\/strong>focused on talent acquisition. I later moved into the front-office as the face of the company. It pushed me, challenged me in ways I could not have imagined, and sometimes made me uncomfortable. And it reminded me that leadership is less about where you started and more about who you choose to become, how you show up for others, and the impact you will leave behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really started pushing my limits: taking on speaking engagements with <a href=\"https:\/\/yesmontreal.ca\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yesmontreal.ca\/\">YES Montreal<\/a>, getting involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalstemwomen.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.globalstemwomen.org\/\">Global STEM Women Congress<\/a> as an ambassador, and engaging with the <a href=\"https:\/\/wbecanada.ca\/\">WBE Canada<\/a> community to promote the organization every chance I got. Those experiences pushed me to grow in new directions and strengthened my confidence as a leader. I\u2019m passionate about helping others grow, and my values truly align with my actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How This Translates Into Our Day-to-Day Actions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Elevate others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the first and foremost attribute of a leader who opens doors for women entrepreneurs, diverse talent pools, and underrepresented voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Lead with integrity and purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Integrity is the highest level of values I can demonstrate to my candidates, clients, and my teams. Just do what is right \u2013 is it that hard to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Actions speak louder than words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a huge advocate for <strong>ACTION <\/strong>\u2013 let\u2019s get involved and support our diverse communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Inclusive growth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At <strong>Expertis<\/strong>, we champion equitable hiring, supplier diversity, and opportunities that strengthen the ecosystem for women in STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Impact &amp; Legacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership is not the actual award itself \u2013 it\u2019s the ongoing work of empowering others, elevating your standards, and <em>making IT happen<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what is leadership?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, it\u2019s definitely about showing up and consistently doing so with purpose and intention. It\u2019s about doing the hard work behind the scenes, pushing your limits, stepping into new awkward spaces, and helping others rise with you. I can certainly attest to this, as I have worked hard to create that safe space for myself and for anyone who joins our team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Personal Reflection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve personally struggled with being vulnerable and open. It\u2019s not easy to come out in the corporate world.&nbsp; I\u2019ve spent so much time trying to get ahead, always laser-focused on career growth and advancement. I was fearful that coming out would somehow negatively impact my career opportunities and derail any path to success. And I know that I\u2019m not alone.&nbsp; Even today, I know many professionals in the LGBTQIA+ community who are still afraid to come out at work.&nbsp; I could not imagine living my daily life behind a mask. Not being able to live authentically would chip away at my soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Times have changed, and we\u2019ve definitely made some progress &#8211; but in the current political climate of hatred and bullying, being authentic continues to be challenging. Building <strong>Expertis <\/strong>gave me the chance to create what I had always imagined: a safe, inclusive space where authenticity is celebrated, not questioned or feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do We Create Safe Spaces at Work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few key practices that any organization can adopt to foster psychological safety and inclusion:<br><br><strong>1. Normalize mental health conversations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk openly about stress, burnout, and well-being. Offer resources and encourage employees to take care of themselves \u2013 without judgement and\/or stigma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Celebrate diversity, don\u2019t just tolerate it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go beyond policies and make diversity visible in leadership, marketing, and your day-to-day culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Create clear inclusion policies and follow through.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A policy is only as strong as its implementation. Make sure equity and belonging are built into every process \u2013 from hiring to career frameworks for promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Empower authenticity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage employees to bring their authentic selves to work. Whether it\u2019s being open about identity, sharing ideas, or expressing boundaries \u2013 authenticity builds trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Provide training and support.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a strong advocate for training and investing in education. Companies need to invest in DEI training and educate teams on unconscious biases, allyship, and inclusive language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do We Move Forward?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating safe spaces at work isn\u2019t a one-time initiative \u2013 it\u2019s an ongoing commitment.&nbsp; It may be <strong><em>National Coming Out Day<\/em><\/strong>, but my reality is that I\u2019m coming out every day! Every meeting, every partnership, every conference, and every conversation is an opportunity to show up authentically!
