Role and Responsibilities

As Director of Operations & People, you will build and strengthen the systems, processes, and organizational infrastructure that enable the organization to operate efficiently and deliver high-impact programs and events. You will ensure strong internal operations, financial coordination, and organizational compliance while also overseeing people-focused functions including hiring, onboarding, performance processes, and culture building.

You will work closely with the CPO and CEO to ensure the organization operates smoothly, inclusively, and sustainably. You ask questions, seek clarity, and take ownership of improving the way we work together.

What we need your help with

As the Director of Operations & People, your responsibilities are:

Operations & Organizational Infrastructure (Primary Focus)

  • Develop, manage, and improve operational systems, processes, and policies that ensure organizational efficiency and clarity.
  • Lead annual operational planning cycles, cross-functional coordination, meeting rhythms, and internal documentation systems.
  • Oversee administrative and technology systems, including CRM, HRIS, internal tools, workflows, and vendor relationships.
  • Manage organizational compliance including privacy, data governance, risk management, and Code of Conduct processes.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusive operational practices across programs, events, and internal workflows.

Finance & Compliance

  • Partner with the Finance Manager/Bookkeeper to support budgeting, forecasting, tracking, and financial controls.
  • Lead internal financial operations including approvals, expense policies, reporting support, and documentation.
  • Support grant requirements by tracking operational deliverables, financial reporting, and compliance needs.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to ensure responsible and transparent financial operations.

People, HR & Culture (Secondary Focus)

  • Lead HR operations including recruitment, onboarding, contracts, performance cycles, and offboarding.
  • Maintain and update employment policies, handbooks, processes, and compliance documents.
  • Support managers with coaching and performance conversations.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive team culture grounded in the values of belonging, empowerment, accessibility, and pride.
  • Coordinate internal training for staff related to compliance, safety, leadership, and organizational development.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the leadership team, contributing to organization-wide planning and decision-making.
  • Partner with Directors to align systems and workflows across Programs, Events, Partnerships, and Marketing.
  • Lead internal communication processes to keep staff aligned, informed, and supported.
  • Other Requirements
  • Ability to travel domestically 10% of the time.
  • Occasionally required to work non-traditional hours to meet travel and other commitments (Pride season, organizational events, and conferences).
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years of experience in operations, HR, people operations, nonprofit management, or related fields.
  • Experience developing and managing internal operational systems and workflows.
  • Strong understanding of HR practices, employment standards, and organizational culture-building.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial processes, or nonprofit financial oversight.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • A commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Must speak English and French fluently.
  • While we are a remote-first company, this role would be based in Montreal.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience working in nonprofit or startup environments.
  • Experience implementing or managing CRMs, HRIS systems, and project management tools.
  • Experience supporting grant reporting, compliance, or risk management.
  • Lived experience as part of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities is a strong asset.

Flexibility and adaptability

Nonprofit organizations can be dynamic and changing environments, and Directors should be able to adapt to changes and shifting priorities.

Working Environment/Conditions

  • $1,600 per year for Transportation, Mental Health & Wellness budget
  • $600 per year for professional development
  • 4 personal days annually
  • 4 weeks time off, including the holiday break
  • 8 hours of professional development per quarter (up to 4 days annually)
  • Cell phone and Internet stipend up to $100/month
